LORD, FORGIVE US ! Thousands Gathering for Third Year of Prayer in the Square to Pray for God’s Mercy on Behalf of Our Nation | |
New York, N.Y. – July 3, 2009--- On September 20, 2009, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in Times Square, New York City, thousands of people of all ages, races, cultures, and backgrounds, representing churches of every denomination, are gathering together to pray for our nation at Prayer in the Square. The one-hour event drew an estimated 18,000 to 20,000 people in 2008 and is expected to draw an even larger crowd this year. The theme of the event is “Lord, Forgive us!” -- a call to God’s people to seek God’s mercy. “In the Bible, Daniel prayed on behalf of a people who had sinned. He prayed explicitly for mercy and forgiveness,” says Carter Conlon, Senior Pastor of Times Square Church. “On September 20, the third and final year of Prayer in the Square, we will gather in humility to pray and ask God for forgiveness on behalf of our nation. I believe 2009 will be a very profound year and by September we will see the fulfillment of why God has called us to pray. This is about Jesus Christ being glorified and about the church being strengthened.” A 180-voice gospel choir will sing between three-minute intervals of prayer. Ten people, including church leaders, as well as individuals from different walks of life, will pray for three minutes each. The event will be broadcast live on radio on STAR 99.1 FM (New York), and Radio Cantico Nuevo (Spanish language, New York). Churches in various countries around the world, including Burundi, Kenya, United Kingdom, Benin, Singapore, and Israel, will be are gathering to pray via the live webcast at nycprayer.org. The event is open to the public and to churches of all denominations.
